American Lake is a great lake for small, large, and rock bass. Anglers that fish these waters either complain about not catching what they are looking for or about the abundance of jet and water skiers that frequently traverse along the shoreline where they happen to be fishing. Both can present a problem if you don't know how to deal with them. I have been very successful at catching large quantities of bass and at good sizes. There isn't a lot of structure throughout the lake, so I definitely targeted what little structure that I did find. These are little honey holes. Boat docks and decks litter the lake on almost all shores. Around these you will find a lot of rock bass and some giant small mouth. There are also a few islands toward the middle of the lake that create naturals channels for fish to swim in. There is great fishing in these too. On the other side of the lake is a smaller portion that is in the no wake zone. This is where the majority of the large mouth traverse. Lizards and worms are key here, but be aware that these fish are huge and have been around a long time. Anything will spoke them into not biting, so the best time is early morning with a top-water lure. Make sure you have at least 8 to 10 lbs test line and keep them up because they will dive quickly in to the weed and bury themselves there. If you fancy the small mouth, you will need to get a pack of Gitzit tube baits and bottom fish it with a few bumps and jumps here and there. Be careful because the strike may be very subtle and you may think it is nothing. Keep constant contact with the line and always set the hook if you are in doubt. Once you hook in to one of these monster fish, you'll most likely forget all about the skiers there. American lake is a great bass fishery and it is also rumored to maybe have a state record within its midst. Kevin@shawsweb.com
